UV System
UV systems, or ultraviolet systems, use ultraviolet light to disinfect water by killing or inactivating bacteria, viruses, algae, and other microorganisms. Below we will explain how our UV systems work and why our customers use them in various aquatic environments.
What is a UV System?
Our UV systems consist of:
- UV Lamp: Emits ultraviolet light in the UV-C spectrum, which is germicidal. The UV-C light has a wavelengths of 253.7 nm being particularly effective against pathogens.
- Quartz Sleeve: Protects the lamp and allows UV light to pass through into the water while separating the lamp from direct contact with water.
- Housing: Encloses the lamp and sleeve, made from HDPE or stainless steel 316L to ensure durability and to reflect UV light to enhance efficiency.
- Ballast: To regulate the electrical power supplied to the UV lamp. UV lamps require a specific voltage and current to operate efficiently and safely.
- Water Flow Path: Designed to ensure that all water passing through is exposed to sufficient UV light for disinfection.
Why Use UV Systems?
Aquaculture:
- Disease Control: UV light can effectively kill pathogens like bacteria and viruses, reducing disease outbreaks in fish populations.
- Parasite Management: Effective against certain parasites, particularly those in the water column, without the use of chemicals that might affect fish health.
- Water Quality: By reducing the biological load, UV systems help maintain water clarity and quality, which is crucial for high-density aquaculture.
Koi Ponds:

- Maintenance: UV lamps degrade over time and need to be replaced periodically. The quartz sleeves also require cleaning to remove any buildup that could block UV light.
- Depth of Treatment: UV systems treat only what passes through them, so they work best in conjunction with filtration systems to handle solids and larger pathogens.
